Business Studies
Our vision for Business students at Kineton High School is wide-ranging. We believe that a strong background in Business education is a key ingredient in preparing students for a career in any setting. In addition to this, many of our students go on to pursue Business-related subjects at University and we aim to ensure that they receive an experience which thoroughly prepares them for this.
We aim to foster a creative culture with strong elements of enterprise. Students will investigate how businesses of all shapes and sizes operate in a variety of markets. They will also have the opportunity to research, plan and deliver a pitch for a given product. Along the way, students will develop the following transferable skills:
- Strong communication skills (oral and written)
- Analytical and critical thinking
- Problem solving
- Decision making
- Presentation and report writing skills
- Numeracy and an understanding of how to interpret and use financial data
- Self-motivation, initiative and effective time management
- Project and resource management
- An awareness of the legal, social and economic factors that affect businesses and their customers
For further information please contact Mr J Keevill.
Computer Science
By the end of KS3, we expect our students to have developed a good set of computational thinking skills. In practical terms, this means that they will relish the opportunity of tackling complex problems in a disciplined and focused way.
Students will recognise that success does not always come at the first attempt and will persevere to try out alternative approaches when solving problems. Their solutions will need to be communicated in a way that both a computer and human can understand. This might be a line of computer code or a short presentation.
Computational thinkers are team-workers and our students will have the ability to work effectively with others. They will be able to express their ideas confidently whilst respecting the input of their peers.
We also appreciate that success in a modern workplace or academic institution will require our learners to develop a variety of skills in a range of software applications. Computer scientists or not, workers of the future will need to excel in their use of spreadsheets, word processors and databases.
The curriculum plan for each subject demonstrates the planned progression for students across a key stage. It is therefore a strategic document to ensure that all students receive the same key curriculum whilst enabling staff to develop their lessons to adapt to the needs of their individual students. As a result there may be some adaption to the timescales of the overviews, but the key assessment points will provide the means to ensure that all students have benefited from the agreed curriculum.

The DT department at Kineton High School are committed to delivering a curriculum accessible to all, which provides the broadest possible range of opportunities for students. We aim to encourage our students to become independent, motivated and confident learners who can become great team members too. We encourage students to develop practical skills as well as technical knowledge. We want our learners to be analytical and develop evaluation skills with their creativity.
We believe that students learn best by doing, and practical work is at the heart of learning at KS3 and 4. We embrace new ideas whilst retaining the best traditional skills and practices. We also want our students to become better citizens, consumers and responsible adults who can not only apply the skills they learn to future learning and a career but also their own everyday life and home. Environmental, social and ethical responsibilities of designers, manufacturers and consumers underpin our projects.
We value both academic and vocational skills and their importance in the world we live.
We want to engender happy students who are proud of their creations and achievements.

English
The Limits of my language are the limits of my world’
‘Without language, one cannot talk to people and understand them; one cannot share their hopes and aspirations, grasp their history, appreciate their poetry, or savour their songs’ Nelson Mandela
An experienced and inclusive team, the English Department at Kineton High School are committed to delivering the very best education to our students. We aim to equip all young people in our care with the skills to not only be functionally literate in the wider world but also to be imaginative, creative thinkers capable of exhibiting empathy, taking risks and showing resilience. Our overriding aim is that students are able to communicate skillfully and confidently.
Our curriculum is driven by a focus on the key skills needed, not only for GCSE, but for life. There is real emphasis placed on the importance of talk and students become confident orators both within groups and as individual presenters, culminating in their GCSE Spoken Language assessment. Talk is used as a tool to generate and evaluate ideas, to develop team work and to build personal confidence. In addition to this, we are passionate about sharing our love of reading for pleasure and dedicate curriculum time to this. All students at KS3 spend an hour a fortnight reading for pleasure in our well-resourced library which is enhanced through the use of the Accelerated Reader programme. Naturally, reading evolves into writing and we encourage our students to become independent, accurate and creative writers who are well prepared to cope with the demands of a range of tasks. This is facilitated through lessons that focus on a full range of genres.
We also aspire to offer a rich range of extra-curricular activities. We actively celebrate World Book Day, have guest authors and poets in to speak to students and conduct workshops, have visiting theatre groups come into school and have also recently offered enrichment activities at the RSC and attended the PIXL conference.

Media Studies
In the digital age, the media is inescapable. We in the Media Studies department feel strongly that students should be equipped and empowered to explore and evaluate the media. We teach students to critically analyse media texts so that they can understand the messages hidden within them. We also teach them how to create their own media texts. We use the latest technology and analyse current texts (including social media) – this is very much a contemporary subject relevant in a modern media landscape.
We offer Media Studies as a Year 9 option; this is a foundation course where students learn the ‘basics’ of analysing and creative media. We study the AQA course at GCSE, which is popular. Some key texts we study here are His Dark Materials, Marcus Rashford’s online presence, Radio 1 and Arctic Monkeys’ music videos. We offer a Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Digital Media for Year 12 and 13 students. This is a popular course where students learn about all elements of the media industry and then create their own media texts. It is a fantastic course for anyone who wants a career in communication, social media, journalism and advertising. The course also links well with Sociology, Photography, English Language/Literature and Business.
Our media roadmap details KHS’s media “journey” and our core principles.

Expressive Arts
Art
In Art and Design students will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and foster an appreciation of the visual world around them. A varied curriculum of projects, often linked to the work of other artists, will inspire students. Structured teaching will enable them to develop their practical skills to realise their ideas in different media and to be increasingly independent as they gain experience and confidence.
Through projects students will investigate and develop ideas and gain an appreciation of the work of other artists. They will experiment with techniques and refine their ideas. Students will be able to draw and record in a variety of ways and reflect on their progress. They will present considered final pieces that realise their intentions.
It is our vision to provide creative and engaging opportunities that will inspire our students now and in the future.

HUMANITIES
Humanities
Humanities at Kineton High School encompasses the subjects of History; Geography; Religious Education; Philosophy and Ethics; Sociology and Psychology and Health and Social Care.
The subjects within Humanities are academically rigorous disciplines that celebrate success, effort and determination from our students. We explore a variety of perspectives based upon an appreciation and tolerance of different viewpoints. In a modern world where information is widely and freely available we encourage students to reflect thoughtfully upon multiple opinions. To recognise the need to critically analyse evidence; to open minds to the ‘big picture’ and to both express and constructively challenge different viewpoints. Students who study Humanities are encouraged to ask questions and to separate fact from opinion and misinformation before making judgements based upon an evaluation of available evidence.
Geography
Geography is a hugely important subject; it allows us the pass onto the citizens of tomorrow thousands of years’ worth of discoveries about how our world works. It equips them with a broad range of skills that shape the way they see the world and enables them to add to these discoveries.
- The study of Geography creates a sense of space and place and looks at the relationships between space and place at different scales.
- Geographers link physical, human and cultural processes and examine how these processes shape the world we live in. The subject creates an awareness of the fact that all these processes work together and consequently our world is constantly changing.
- Geography raises awareness of environmental issues and how these have impacts at local, regional and global scales.
- Geographers recognise that there are many different groups with varying attitudes and interests. These varying attitudes and interests could mean that there are ranges of different impacts, depending on which attitude and actions are followed.
- Geographers use evidence and data to examine how valid theories are by using open minded and detailed analysis.
At Key Stage Three students explore a range of geographical issues and contexts, including case studies on Japan and the Amazon, climate change, and coastal erosion. Learning outside of the classroom includes fieldwork in the Cotswolds and local environmental surveys.
At Key Stage Four GCSE students follow the WJEC exam board, looking at both physical and human geography and conducting fieldwork in Worcester.
At Key Stage Five A-Level students follow the Edexcel exam board, studying issues such as migration, sovereignty and identity; regeneration; tectonics and also conducting an independent investigation into a geographical issue of their choosing.

History
In the vital subject of History students will study a variety of different events and time periods in order to develop skills of source analysis, extended written evaluation and an appreciation of multiple historical interpretations. They will learn to:
- Use evidence to build balanced and persuasive arguments
- Assess the relative value of different sources
- Appreciate and evaluate the significance of events which have shaped our world
- Recognise how and why different views on the same subject can be constructed
- Reflect on the interconnected relationship between events, individuals and organisations
At Key Stage Three students study a range of topics from the early Medieval world right through to the end of the Twentieth Century, with opportunities to explore a variety of learning activities both in and outside of the classroom. These include opportunities for debating, persuasive writing and image analysis amongst others.
At Key Stage Four GCSE students follow the Edexcel exam board and study Crime and Punishment through time; Superpower Relations and the Cold War; The Reigns of King Richard and King John; and the USA, 1954-75. Examination is through three papers at the end of the course looking at source analysis, historical interpretations and extended written evaluation.
At Key Stage Five A-Level students follow the OCR exam board. This includes studying Dictatorship and Democracy in Germany, 1919-63; Britain, 1900-51; Tudor Rebellions; and a 4,000-word personal study on a topic of their choosing.
The curriculum plan for each subject demonstrates the planned progression for students across a key stage. RE
Our RE curriculum has been designed to allow our students to practice and develop the vital skills of application and analysis. Application is so important in our subject, as we seek not only to understand the opinions of a range of religions and perspectives, but also the reasons and teachings behind them. Analysis is also at the forefront of our subject as through discussion and enquiry, students are invited to consider and appreciate the significance of the views we study to those who hold them.
Students are encouraged to take an open-minded approach when studying the views of others, but are also given the chance to respond these viewpoints in a respectful way. Our KS3 curriculum introduces students to a broad range of topics. In Year 7, students study thee topics; Big Questions, in which we consider one philosophical question each lesson, Religion Around Us, which takes a comparative approach to analyse differences in the beliefs and practices of religion in multi-cultural Britain, and Sikhism: A Religion of Equality, in which students analyse how Sikh beliefs reflect the importance of equality. In Year 8, students study five topics; Human Rights, in which we analyse the importance of rights and responsibilities, Buddhism, in which we analyse the significance of key beliefs and practices for Buddhists, and Environmental Ethics, Medical Ethics and Animal Rights which all consider a range of religious and non-religious responses to moral issues.
At GCSE level, we study the Edexcel specification B course, which explores Christian, Muslim, Humanistic and Atheist responses to a wide range of moral issues as well as analysing the key teachings of Christianity and Islam in detail. At KS5 we offer the Social Sciences courses of Psychology and Sociology. Therefore, our curriculum offers both great depth and breadth, as students are encouraged to study a wide range of issues and perspectives in great detail.

MATHEMATICS
MATHEMATICS
When pupils arrive in Year 7, we follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage 3, building upon our students’ knowledge from primary school. In their mathematics lessons during Key Stage 3, students are studying a mastery curriculum, focused on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. This has been specifically designed to prepare students for studying the new, more challenging, GCSE course.
We believe that maths is an integral part of everyday living. Mathematics permeates every aspect of modern life, and it is essential that pupils are educated in preparation for this. Students need to be excited by the mathematics they are learning and see how the material applies to real situations.
Maths is highly regarded by post-16 institutions as well as employers, so helping all of our students to achieve success is of paramount importance. More importantly however, we believe that studying this subject enhances students’ logical reasoning abilities and problem solving skills preparing young adults for the challenges that lay ahead.
We are continuously working to motivate students and instil a personal sense of desire. This creates a positive learning experience. At Kineton High School, we take great pride in the work ethic that students show in maths, and we feel that it is the heightening sense of desire that has seen results gradually increase over recent years. We want to work with our students to develop a ‘can-do’ attitude that will help them overcome obstacles, work hard and put in their best effort in every maths lesson.
A Student at Kineton High School can expect:
- To be motivated and to gain personal success in Maths
- To experience a positive learning experience
- To learn and feel safe
- To be taught by a teacher with high expectations
- To build upon life skills required for “the real world” and acknowledge the value of Maths
The curriculum plan for each subject demonstrates the planned progression for students across a key stage. It is therefore a strategic document to ensure that all students receive the same key curriculum whilst enabling staff to develop their lessons to adapt to the needs of their individual students. Modern Foreign Languages
Modern Foreign Languages
French and Spanish are communication subjects and as such provide vital skills for all students both in foreign languages, and in their own. We aim to create confident speakers who are resilient and risk takers. Successful linguists are unafraid of making mistakes and relish the challenge of understanding, speaking and writing in a different language, manipulating what they know to get their message across. They are able to make links between languages and recognise patterns and structures in words and grammar. Learning a language develops character, confidence and communication.
All students study Spanish from year 7 and continue with this language up to Year 9. They can then choose to take it at GCSE. We aim to offer French in Year 9/ 10 for exceptional and committed linguists.
Each MFL lesson focuses on all four skills of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading and writing, with a heavier focus on the more active of these, speaking and writing. Staff use target language in lessons and students are encouraged to participate vocally; the more they speak, the better the language development.
We follow the AQA syllabus at GCSE, and the foundations for this are set at KS3 using Studio for French and Viva for Spanish throughout KS3 and KS4. In their GCSE exams, students are tested on all four skills, that each carry 25% of the mark, and to prepare for this, in every MFL class, students are assessed in all of the four skills at the end of every topic, roughly every half term.
Vocabulary learning is set regularly as homework, and students are tested on their comprehension and spelling. Parental support here is very useful!
Our MFL trips have always been popular and exciting. In the past we have visited Granada, Valencia, Nantes and St Omer, and our A level students spend a week undertaking Work Experience in their chosen country. The trips focus on both language activities and cultural awareness, and have been hugely successful since their introduction.

Physical Education
Physical Education
Physical Education is a core part of everyone’s lives and is in everything that we do. The importance of being healthy, motivated and part of a team improves every aspect of life and is why Physical Education is so important. Throughout some difficult times as a society recently, Physical Education can also be a way of alleviating mental health concerns. Through KS3 to KS4 we develop physical literacy that is the building blocks of a successful application of Physical Education. While we do use a range of sport disciplines, giving students a range of opportunities so they are more likely to find something that is right for them, they are almost irrelevant as they are the medium through which we teach them to look after bodies, give them an interest to maintain throughout their lives outside of school and instil a lifelong passion for sport and sporting achievement as a spectator if nothing else. Students in all years are encouraged and signposted to Extra-Curricular Activity (ECA) to take part in competitive training for inter-house fixtures or to enjoy a recreational session to enhance their healthy lifestyle.
At Key Stage 3 we believe it is far too early for students to have a single sporting activity of choice. Instead, we offer them a wide range of activities and experiences whatever their ability level. During this stage they are taught powerful knowledge, skills and understanding across the following activities; Football, Netball, Rugby, Hockey, Badminton, Handball, Cricket, Leadership, Dance, Gymnastics, Health Related Fitness, Trampolining, Tennis, Rounders and Athletics *These activities might change each year dependent on the years groups curriculum plan.
At Key Stage 4 we now believe that students can make informed choices and, whilst still offering traditional activities across the curriculum, we also allow students to the opportunity to opt into a range of activity blocks bases on their preferences of what is available to them. In addition to this, students also have the opportunity to study BTEC Level 2 Sport/BTEC Level1/2 Technical in Sport or AQA GCSE Physical Education (See Mr Pearce for more details) through the option system.
At Key Stage 5 we offer BTEC Level 3 Sport (See Mr Pearce for more details).
Sport continues to play an influential part in students school lives in that many students help coach younger students and lead inter-house activities. We are hugely proud of all students that represent our school sports teams against other South Warwickshire schools in a variety of competitive competitions and friendly fixtures.
The curriculum plan for each subject demonstrates the planned progression for students across and between the key stages. It is therefore, a strategic document to ensure that all students receive the same key curriculum whilst enabling staff to develop their lessons to adapt to the needs of their individual students. As a result, there may be some adaption to the timescales of the overviews, but the key assessment points will provide the means to ensure that all students have benefited from the agreed curriculum.
For KHS, the curriculum does not end in the classroom, we ensure that students have access to a comprehensive extra-curricular offer that allows for regular competition and representation of the school. These sessions are an extension of the lessons that students are free to access to progress their knowledge and skills further.
We truly believe that for our students, the sky is the limit. We want them to show the very values that Kineton High School is known for; Respect, Ambition and Kindness and to develop in this knowledge rich environment.

Science
Science
Students value Science as a subject, they develop their curiosity of Science in the wider world and are challenged to ensure they succeed.
Science is diverse and exciting, and our Science department helps students to explore the world around them and understand so many things that have relevance to daily life. Scientific enquiry is at the heart of our curriculum and all units of work feature an investigation designed to develop their curiosity.
At KS3 (Years 7 and 8) the department has developed its own scheme covering the national curriculum and uses Nelson Thornes ‘Fusion’ to divide content. Scientific enquiry skills are taught throughout the course and assessed during each topic via an investigation.
At KS4 (Years 9-11) Year 9 all study the AQA triple award course, students are then opt at the end of Year 9 to study triple Science or combined science trilogy through Years 10 and 11.
At KS5 the department offers three Advanced Level courses. AQA Biology, AQA Chemistry and AQA Physics. All Advanced Level courses are taught by specialists.
Science teachers set high expectations and employ a range of assessment methods. Independent learning in KS4 is set at the start of the year and monitored fortnightly. Teachers offer supportive feedback so students can track their own progress and set targets.
The department offers a range of STEM and OOHL opportunities including the EES scheme for KS5, the big bang fair, dissection club and the Physics factor.

Character and Culture
Character and Culture (formally known as PSHE) is a compulsory curriculum subject that all pupils will be involved in once per fortnight throughout their time at Kineton High School.
The aim of the Character and Culture curriculum is to help develop every individual holistically so that they leave school with the skills and attributes required to be a respectful and active member of society. We aim to promote students personal and social development alongside their mental and emotional well-being through providing specific opportunities in a safe and supportive environment. These opportunities will allow pupils time to discuss and reflect upon the challenges that they may face as young people as they grow and develop in modern Britain and indeed our local context.
At Kineton we offer a broad and balanced Character and Culture curriculum through the delivery of 4 unique teams:
- Relationship and Sex Education
- Healthy Lifestyles
- Employability
- Social Studies
Within each of these 4 areas pupils will acquire the knowledge, skills and understanding to:
- Develop effective and safe relationships
- Develop independence and responsibility
- Develop self-awareness, confidence and positive self-esteem
- Learn to keep themselves and others safe
- Learn to resect the differences between people
- Learn how to live a healthier and safer lifestyle
- Make a positive contribution to society
A planned age appropriate curriculum will be taught to all students and can be personalised to individuals and groups through the involvement of a network of external partners. These partners work with Kineton High School to ensure additional and extra services can be provided in response to individual needs. This may include the involvement of Careers Advisor, School Health Nurses, Police Liaison Workers, Social Services, Teenage Pregnancy Advisory Services, Warwickshire Drugs Team and Young Carers where appropriate.
