A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.
A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she: 

• has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or 
• has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions 

If you believe your child has a special educational need, learning difficulty or disability which has not been identified then please make contact with our SEND team to talk about your concerns. You can do this by calling the main school line and asking to speak to the SENCO

What is the Local Offer? 

Every local authority must publish a Local Offer. The Local Offer tells you what support is available for children and young people with special educational needs (SEN) and/or disabilities, and their families. It should include information about education, health and care provision. It should also tell you about training, employment and independent living for young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Warwickshire's Local Offer for SEND brings together information about education, health and care services for children and young people from 0 to 25 with special educational needs and disabilities.  It can be accessed here: www.warwickshire.gov.uk/send

Warwickshire SENDIAS (Special Education Needs Information Advice and Support Services) supports parents and carers of all Warwickshire children with special educational needs and disabilities, from 0 - 25 years of age.  It is a free, confidential and impartial service for parents and carers, children and young people up to 25 years.  Warwickshire SENDIAS offers independent support for parents and families who have children and young people with a SEND.  We also provide this independent advice directly to young peoples aged 16 to 25 years with a SEND.

How does the service work?

The type and range of support offered includes:

• Information regarding the local offer, local policy and SEN/disability law from independently trained staff;
• Advice for parents/carers, children and young people on gathering, understanding and interpreting information and applying it to their own situation;
• Personalisation of personal budgets;
• Information on the county council's processes for resolving disagreements, its complaints procedures and means of redress;
• Signposting children, young people and parents to alternative and additional sources of local and national information, advice and support;

Who is the service for?

The service is for parents who have a child/children up to the age of 25 that has/have Special Educational Needs and young people aged 16-25 who have Special Educational Needs young people 16 and over can access the service in their own right or with the support of their parents.

My child has just been diagnosed with a SEND need. What happens next?
There are several steps we take as a department when a child has a new diagnosis:

• We will request a copy of the report.
• The report will be read by the SEND team.
• Based on information in the report a Pupil Passport will be created/or updated and
• shared with all teaching staff.
• A diagnosis does not mean your child will be put on the send register as there are a
• range of factors that are reviewed for a child to be on the SEND register. Students
• are, however, put onto the ‘Teacher Aware’ list.
• During the next send register audit your child’s status will be reviewed, and if there
• are any changes you will receive a letter detailing those changes and what that
• means, from the SEND department.
• Recommendations from the report, where possible, will be introduced in school and
• added to you child’s Pupil Passport where appropriate.
• The majority of support and differentiation takes place inside the classroom. All of our
• teachers are Quality First Teachers, which means SEND students are at the heart of
• their planning.
• We have a large number of SEND students and all of our staff are trained to work
• with a number of different additional needs.
• Once we have received the report, everything will be actioned within 5 working days.

If you have any concerns that recommendations are not being actioned in a particular subject, it is best to speak directly to that subject teacher or Head of Department in the first instance. If you feel there are no changes or several subjects are not putting in place the recommendations, contact the SEND department.
